The Double Barrier Screw
Advanced extrusion researchers agree that the double barrier screw is one of the most effective extrusion screw designs available. The double barrier screw is the result of research and optimization of the extrusion plastication process by SPR Inc. SPR, Inc. was granted the patent for this design which is now being offered by Extrusion Technical Services. This screw design offers the following advantages:
1) Optimization of solids contact with the barrel and melt film thickness to produce the highest specific melting rates.
2) High throughput rates.
3) Low melt temperature.
4) Stable pressure generation.
5) Control of un-melts and gels.
6) Symmetrical design which results in lower screw wear than single flighted barrier designs.
7) Variable lead optimizes melting and provides room for solids, melt and screw flights.
8) Highly optimized designs for specific materials or more universal designs are available.
9) Designed on the finest single screw simulation package ever produced; SPR’s Extrud 2000. Extrud is able to automatically explore and evaluate thousands of potential designs in order to find the best design for your application. Through this process decades of cut and try screw design can be reduced to a few hours of computer time.
