HISTORY OF ANDERSON

Mr. Valerius D. Anderson

No history can be complete without mention of the founder and humble roots of this company.

Mr. Valerius D. Anderson was 58 years old when he founded our company as the V. D. Anderson Company in 1888. He was a true product of the Industrial Revolution, an inventor and visionary not afraid to risk all for an idea. In 1855 he worked in Milton, Wisconsin in a tin shop repairing leaky roofs and fabricating hoops for the then popular hoop skirts. He moved to Kewanee, Illinois where he developed and patented an improved steam boiler, which led him to form a company to manufacture and sell them.

A better opportunity arose for him in Springfield, Ohio where he operated the Mast-Foos Company; a boiler manufacturing company which later became a part of International Harvester.

Mr. Anderson severed his relationship with the Mast-Foos Company in 1876 and four years later, in 1880, relocated to Cleveland, Ohio where he invented a new rendering tank for local butchers. Sales of these tanks dropped when packinghouses started to replace butcher shops, causing Mr. Anderson to develop and turn to the manufacture of fertilizer dryers. His first assembly operation was a "home" industry, located on West 54th Street, which then formed the basis for Mr. Anderson to found the V. D. Anderson Company in 1888.

By 1893 the business had prospered to the point that it was necessary to build a small manufacturing plant. A tract of land was purchased on West 96th Street and what is now Madison Avenue. It was the first manufacturing plant built on the West Side of Cleveland.

The Inventions

Expeller® Press - The product for which the company is best known is the Expeller® press. In 1876 At the Chicago Centennial Exposition Mr. Anderson witnessed a printing press print on a continuous web of paper, rather than one sheet at a time. It was then that Mr. Anderson conceived of the idea that there must be a continuous means of extracting oil from oleaginous seeds and nuts. It was not until 1900; however, that the first successful Expeller® press was produced.

Even though he invented this press for what we now call the Vegetable Oil Industry, it was his friends in the butcher shop/packinghouse industry who tried it first in degreasing their cooked by-product materials. As will be later shown, this product, the Expeller® press, revolutionized many industries.

Steam Traps - It must be recalled that Valerius D. Anderson was knowledgeable in steam boilers and fertilizer dryers. His success in manufacturing fertilizer dryers was enhanced by his development of an improved steam trap in 1893, called the float type trap. He found that the efficiency of any steam system is only as good as the quality or dryness of the steam being used. This is the responsibility of the steam trap, which separates condensate from the steam in steam systems. His development of this style steam trap not only made his fertilizer dryer the most efficient, but also expanded his market into steam specialties around the world.
