Swiss Screw Machine Products with CNC Swiss Turns and cam type Swiss Automatics

Swiss type turning first originated for the purpose of producing fine watch components for the Swiss watch industry. The unique arrangement of their sliding headstock design gives them a distinct advantage on miniature and micro machining of turned part or parts with an unusually long and slender profile. Cam actuated versions were some of the first automatic lathes built and Americans referred to them as Swiss Type Automatic Screw Machines. Today, the cam operated Swiss type screw machines are still widely use for high volume production, however CNC (or Computerized Numerical Control) versions of the Swiss style sliding headstock lathe (screw machines) are being widely used in an even broader range of applications.

CNC Swiss turned (CNC Swiss screw machine) products are the modern day solution for many turned parts made from exotic metals and difficult to machine alloys. They also excel in complex part configurations that were very difficult to produce on cam type Swiss screw machines. Often, a CNC Swiss Turn can complete a complex part in one operation, voiding the added cost of secondary operations when using older technology. In fact, at Cox Manufacturing Company (Comaco), we use CNC Swiss Turns with up to twelve (12) axis of CNC control and we can machine in one operation, even the most complex screw machine product imaginable.

Short production runs and rush orders also benefit from the CNC technology on Swiss machines, by eliminating the need for cams and their added costs. It is interesting to note however that computer technology applied to cam design and cam making has also reduced the cost of tooling cam Swiss screw machines as well. In fact a cam set purchased today is actually more accurate and cost less in 2002 than it did in 1980!

Cox Manufacturing Company (Comaco), has a long history of utilizing Swiss screw machines and actually started in 1956 with a Swiss automatic. For decades now, we used the Swiss automatic (or Swiss Screw Machine) to supply automotive, defense, aerospace, appliance and electronics industries across North America. We however utilize a variety of turning solutions ranging from CNC and cam type Swiss Lathes (or automatic screw machines) and standard fixed headstock CNC lathes to multi-spindle (multispindle or multiple spindle) screw machines. We pride ourselves with having an unusually broad capability and offer the ability to match the best machining process to achieve the quality and cost economies across a broad
