Nestled in the quiet, rural community of Troy, Alabama is headquarters for the international leader in polypropylene/ polyethylene recycling - KW Plastics. A freshly-painted "smiley face" peers down from perhaps the world's largest plastics storage silo, and surveys the sprawling operation begun in 1981 by partners Kenneth Campbell and Wiley Sanders, Jr., the "K" and "W" of KW Plastics, respectively.
KW Plastics was formed originally in 1981 to recycle polypropylene. A second polypropylene recycling plant was opened in Bakersfield, California in 1986, where injection molding machines ranging from 350 to 1,000 tons were installed to produce new battery containers and custom parts from recycled resins.
A new post-consumer and post-industrial plastics recycling plant started up in January 1993 in Troy. This ultra-modern facility processes high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP). KW Plastics' proprietary technology was developed through years of in-house research, and consistently produces high quality product that is normally not associated with recycled resin. In fact, KW Plastics' material can be used in non-food grade applications at 100% ratios
