Excellence in Design & Engineering
Performance Driven by Extrusion Process Expertise
Merritt is an organization with a seasoned team of professionals and a wealth of technical knowledge ready to provide equipment that enhances your production operation. We carefully engineer our products drawing upon over a century of experience and utilize the most up-to-date methods and proven components. Our attention to detail and coordination of a system or an extruder is one of our most valuable assets.
With an unmatched wealth of extrusion process knowldge in blown film, cast film, compounding, fiber, hot melt, medical, pipe, profile, reclaim, sheet, tubing, and wire & cable applications, Merritt's engineers utilize advanced CAD/CAM/CAE tools to design your system. The latest technological advances and components are integrated into your system to enhance overall performance.
Manufacturing to the Highest Standards
Merritt's 75,000 sq. ft. facility houses all operations - inventory control, precision machining, assembly, panel fabrication, systems integration and quality control - allowing a close knit team effort to provide the best equipment to our customers.
Testing and Service to Ensure Quality
Equipment is tested prior to shipment and laboratory facilities are available to run material prior to specifying extruders. A team of process experienced technicians are available to assist with start-up as well as supervision of installation and operation at your facility.
Trouble shooting, process problem solving, classroom instruction and consulting services are available.
Merritt offers a wide range of extruder sizes including the uncommon intermediates. Typically, in extrusion system design, the calculated extruder output rate is the result of a downstream limitation in the cooling or line speed. The result is an extruder that is manufactured to operate within the 75 to 85 percent range. Frequently, the in between size will clearly be the best choice because an oversized unit is not only more costly, but can adversely affect the extrudate quality. Operation that is too slow may cause polymer degradation and poor melt uniformity. Extruder design utilizing the latest technological advances and components enhances overall performance.
Merritt Extruder Offers Gearbox Retrofit Upgrade Packages
Hamden, CT - Merritt Extruder has developed a custom assembly to replace the gear boxes of older extruders that have units that are on the verge of failing or have already done so. This rear end retrofit includes a new high capacity, double reduction gearbox, an adapter to allow the existing screw to be utilized without modification, and new motor mounts to either remount an existing motor or upgrade to a higher level of horsepower to meet today's extrusion processing capabilities.
Optimal replacement of the motor and/or gear box is achieved on 4.5", 6" or 8" extruders from any manufacturer including Sterling, Davis Standard, NRM, Battenfeld Gloucester, Welex, the former HPM and others. Processors can achieve a dramatic economical gain for their older extruders where the front end of an extruder has been continually renewed but the drive train is either failing or no longer able to keep up with today's demands. This means pennies on the dollar as a retrofit versus purchasing a new machine.
Designed for today's demanding materials, Merritt gear boxes are double reduction with precision helical hardened and ground gears with extremely high horsepower capacity. Triple reduction is available. Simple modification to the output shaft can be made to accommodate the extruder's existing shank design. Motors can be supplied as either A.C. vector or state-of-the art digital D.C. depending on the customers' requirements. Configuration is available as left hand/right hand, tuck under U or wrap around, Z or out the back.
Not only will a new gearbox renew the drive train but it will allow for the upgrade of the motor. Typical demand for horsepower has increased over 30-50% in the last 20 years because screw design has allowed the machines a significantly higher throughput capacity. This retrofit package allows older machines to compete with that advantage with this simple retrofit package.
Usually the retrofit installation can be achieved in less than one day to minimize downtime and is done on site at the processing plant.
Merritt Extruder manufactures extruders from _" to 12" and complete systems for medical tubing, tubing, profile, reclaim, compounding & hot melt, blown & cast film, sheet, wire & cable, fiber optics and monofilament fiber.
