Santoprene brand TPVs combine the processibility of a thermoplastic with the performance characteristics of thermoset rubber. That means you can easily and efficiently process any of our grades using conventional thermoplastics injection molding equipment.
Insert molding (sometimes called over-molding) consists of placing a solid insert into the mold and injecting TPV around it. If the insert and the TPV are compatible materials, a melt bond occurs at the interface between the two materials. The strength of this bond is affected by several factors, including interface temperature, cleanliness of the insert and the melt temperature of the TPV.
The TPVs can be combined with compatible polymers through several types of multi-shot injection molding processes. By combining multiple materials, an even wider variety of part applications can be achieved. Two-shot molding requires that the two materials be compatible (chemically similar), or no bonding occurs.
