Container manufacturers continually come up with new container designs. In order to ensure that the container will perform as expected, the design needs to be evaluated.
American Glass Research, a division of Agr, offers computer-generated container design analysis to indicate probable stress levels created by anticipated loads on the containers. These models are used to determine the magnitude and location of stresses throughout the container caused by internal pressure, vertical load, thermal shock, and impact loading. If an unacceptable stress level is indicated, the design can be modified to improve these values, prior to the manufacture of a single bottle.
In addition to new designs, the computer design analysis is also recommended for lightweighting and reducing breakage problems on existing designs. Stress calculations can be made for a specific glass weight to determine the degree of lightweighting achievable. Breakage problems can often be reduced by making small changes in the container design and glass distribution.
