A visionary with more than 40 years of robotic and automation systems experience, Tom Petronis has grown the organization from a four-person team to an international company that provides end-of-arm tooling and connectivity solutions to a multitude of industries spanning several continents.
As CEO and chairman, Petronis strives to maintain the organization's competitive advantage amid a rapidly changing environment. Under his leadership, Applied Robotics has identified and pursued emerging markets, most recently in the life sciences industry, as well as expanded its services to meet industrial automation needs in Europe, Japan and South America. Having obtained ISO-9001 certification in 1998, Applied Robotics' international business currently accounts for about half of the company's $10 million annual revenue.
Petronis has also been instrumental in the design and development of several key automation solutions. Among his many contributions, Petronis co-invented the company's XChange Robotic Hand Changing system and the QuickSTOP Robotic Collision Sensor product lines, as well as designed the company's revolutionary cam latching mechanism. He currently holds three U.S. patents for his inventions.
Before joining Applied Robotics in 1983, Petronis worked for General Electric's automation development and robotic groups in Schenectady, N.Y. During his tenure, he was responsible for developing solutions for a wide spectrum of industrial automation problems. Most notably, he developed several high speed lines for cutting and stacking steel laminations used in the manufacture of large power transformers.
