On August 3, 1959, Walter and June Bunting founded Bunting® Magnetics Co. in Chicago, Illinois. The original location, on Chicago’s north side, was a 500-square-foot storefront office on Fullerton Avenue. The company started as a stocking distributor for cast Alnico magnets and small ceramic magnet assemblies designed for industrial use.

Bunting® Magnetics Co. represents the fulfillment of Mr. Bunting’s ambition to establish a business of his own. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on September 25, 1925. During his youth, Mr. Bunting helped his family struggle through the hard times brought on by the Depression years. During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and saw action aboard ships in the Pacific. In Detroit, after the War, Mr. Bunting married, started raising a family that would grow in time to four children, and began his business career as a salesman for an office supply firm. As soon as he saw an opportunity to get closer to his business goals, he became a partner in a home modernization business. Ten years later, in 1959, he sold his interest in the home improvement business in order to buy the small Chicago distribution firm that he rapidly turned into a thriving sales and manufacturing organization.
