The roots of BERLYN Extruders, Inc. started in 1962 when Gerald E. Berlyn began to manufacture machinery for the plastics industry. The first products were components for plastic extruders which Mr. Berlyn designed and patented. These were followed by other auxiliary machines such as high velocity air strippers for removing water from extruded products, water cooling baths, small pelletizers, and then in 1970, slide plate screen changers. Screen changers are universally used on thermoplastic extruders to remove foreign particles from thermoplastic extrudate. In 1976, Mr. Berlyn invented a continuous filter which is a significant improvement in filtration, and in 1980 the company began building extruders.

The company name was changed to Berlyn Extruders, Inc. in 1998 to better reflect the company's focus and commitment to the extrusion equipment industry.

A very streamline rebuilding and used extruder sales operation has been developed as an adjunct to the new extruder business. The synergy between these two businesses is great and offers customers quality cost saving alternatives.

Product Lines:

Extrusion Systems

Since 1997, the company has focused very successfully on putting together complete extrusion systems for the manufacture of sheet, profile, blown film, recycling, and compounding as well as special products of all sorts. Our extrusion systems have made miles of picture frame moldings, billions of garment tag staples, and coated millions of miles of natural gas and oil line pipe. To do this, we have applied the latest computer technology to our excellent conventional extrusion machinery to provide complete computerized systems and the ultimate technology.

A custom extrusion system which was recently delivered had the following features:

· Co-extrusion capability
· Widths to 108 inches
· 24" diameter rolls
· Thickness of .015 inches to more than ½ inch
· Total indicated run out of .001 inches
· PLC controlled line of all functions
· Automatic roll gap adjustment
· Motorized die to nip adjustment
· Excess cooling capacity
· Continuous filtration of the polymer
· All of the tools needed for optical quality production
· Polymer melt pump and static mixers
· Quick center roll changer allows 4 roll changes per day
· Stainless steel roll construction
· Extruders move in and out for quick changeovers
· L-shaped chrome roll configuration for gap adjustment

Extruders

The product line is defined in single screw extruders up to 15" diameter.

The bulk of our sales fall into the 3 ½", 4 ½", 6", and 8" sizes with length to diameter ratios of 50:1 possible.

With the great variety of sizes and uses for single screw extruders, each customer and each product has slightly different wants or needs. We at Berlyn have become expert at adapting our extruders to satisfy our customers' needs; a service not willingly provided by others in our industry.

Extruder Components

The company provides a broad line of downstream machines which are needed after the extruder to produce various products out of plastic. Some of these machines are listed below.

· Slide plate screen changers-remove impurities from plastic extrudate while the line is running.
· Pelletizing dies - for strand pelletizing.
· Water cooling baths - to cool strands and profile.
· High velocity air strippers - to remove water from strands or profile.
· Laboratory pelletizers - cut solidified strands into uniform pellets.
· Underwater pelletizers - for higher capacity compounding and recycling.
· Vertical screw feeders - to handle low bulk density materials. We are able to process low bulk density reground plastic scrap (as low as 1 pound per cubic foot) into pellets at 35 pounds per cubic foot in a single step and at economical rates.

Continuous Filters

These filters have been designed maintain a constant pressure in the melt stream while removing large volume of contaminants.

Spare Parts and Aftermarket

A significant portion of our business centers around spare parts for our own machinery as well as replacement feed throats, heaters, barrels and screws for all makes of extruders.

Rebuilding

We are known throughout our industry to be the premier extruder rebuilders in the business. This allows us to offer both new and rebuilt machinery plus the option of offering complete lines with a combination of both new and rebuilt components.

Customer Base and Geography

Our company has sold machinery to almost every major chemical and plastics processing company in America as well as throughout the world. We ship 40% to 60% of our product overseas to all major plastic processing countries. A quick run-through of our serial number files will produce an impressive list of major corporations who we service routinely.
